Today, we can see a common use of various CAD software across varied phases of the business like simulation to 3D printing, automation, and management, robotics, Internet of things which boosted the global Computer Aided Design (CAD) market. A good no of CAD software is available for beginners, intermediate and advanced users to design and modeling of various products. In this blog, we familiarise the top CAD software presently in the market, have lots of specifications like 2D and 3D models, custom tool palettes and user-friendly interface.

Autodesk is one of the main CAD software giant which offers different tools for 3D design and modelling, engineering, gaming software development and services. AutoCAD software, the first powerful product from Autodesk, which allows engineers to design and model using DWG technology. The latest version of AutoCAD is AutoCAD 2020, which has advanced features like improved cloud storage integration, DWG Compare Enhancements, Quick Geometry Measurement Tool, AutoCAD mobile app access, Share and use data from PDF and DGN files, Navisworks, Bing Maps, and so on. In addition to that this software is used across different business areas like architecture, graphic design, engineering, automobile etc.

SolidWorks, designed and developed by Dassault Systèmes, is a solid modeling CAD software mainly used for industrial design and mechanical engineering such as automotive, aerospace, architecture, shipbuilding, industrial and medical equipment etc. For using this software the users must be well trained and possess deep knowledge in engineering. Its 3D CAD software is available in three versions that are SOLIDWORKS Standard, SOLIDWORKS Professional and SOLIDWORKS Premium which have powerful 3D design features. The main characteristics are file management tools, reverse engineering, advanced photorealistic rendering, advanced wire and pipe routing functionality, automated cost estimation and more. It uses a set of NURBS to draw precise curvatures and dimensional sketching for easy resizing.

CATIA is a 3D interactive application, also developed by Dassault Systèmes, delivers a unique model of any product and also shows the actual working design. This software mainly used in mechanical engineering and industrial areas like shipbuilding, architecture, automotive, system architects and modeling of industrial equipment. The CATIA users must require both advanced knowledge in engineering and professional training. It is the most powerful, expensive and complicated software in the CAD industry. However, this software is widely preferred in different engineering and industrial areas. It provides an online interface to share products designs and can make changes on that model.

TinkerCAD is an online 3D CAD modelling app which suits for engineering students and professionals. The software follows an intuitive block-building concept, which allows to design and develop models from a set of basic shapes. It has an online library of set of files for shapes that allow users to manipulate designs and also helps to join and subtract  multiple primitive shapes to build complex objects. We can also develop 3D objects by the instructions (code) that we define with the Codeblocks editor and for electronic circuitry it has the Circuits editor.

TinkerCAD has a friendly user interface which suits for beginner-level 3D designing tool. But is does not provide an artistic modelling feature.

Parametric Technology Corporation developed the 3D CAD tool Creo for product designing and development. With its specialized features, the engineers can imagine, design and develop 3D models of products which speeds up the development process. Creo combines the most advanced features such as Augmented Reality, Simulation and analysis, Smart Connected Design, Additive manufacturing, Model-based definition and lots more. It possess some unique functions like motion, structural, thermal, parametric and freestyle surface generation and direct modeling.

Fusion 360

Fusion 360 is a cloud powered 3D CAD software developed by Autodesk, which keeps track of each and every changes of the model from its beginning to the end. It has various design options like freeform, solid and analytic mesh modeling and capabilities such as cloud-based file sharing, collaborate and manage, quickly iterate with sculpting tools, making photorealistic renderings etc.
